Running OBIEE 12c and 11g concurrently

Hi, just curious if anyone is running 12c concurrently with 11g? I'd like to start testing 12c, but we don't have an available server. Since 12c installs into it's own home, is it possible to just run both versions at the same time? Any issues doing so (for example, it looks like the EM port numbers are the same...for 12c maybe I should just change the port numbers to make sure they don't collide with 11g)?

Are you using Linux OS or Windows?

Assuming it's Linux, if you avoid port clashes, install in separate folders, use separate RCU schemas, and the server has the grunt available - no reason why it shouldn't.

But, for just testing, a VM (e.g. SampleApp) would be a whole bunch easier & safer, and you can run it anyway, no need for a server (just 6-8GB on a desktop/laptop)

As @rmoff said, all you need is to ensure that you install into a different area on your server, use different ports for OBIEE components and use different RCU DB schemas and you should be OK.

Hi all, I would use a VM, except we're also going to try to get some performance information, and in the past I've seen OBIEE perform MUCH more slowly on VMs then on actual servers. We are on Linux, and I intend to install in separate directories and keep the OBIEE port numbers different. I'm more concerned about the WebLogic ports like 7001. I'm not a weblogic person (just forced to use it since OBIEE switched to it), and I'm not going to be comfortable if I have to change WLS port numbers.

Is this a big deal?

Actually, it looks like the WLS ports and managed server ports are also in the 9500 range instead of the old 7001, so I think we'll be ok. Anything else tricky I should be aware of?

If you're looking to do performance comparison then having 11g running at the same time wouldn't be valid. And if it's not running, then port clashes isn't an issue.

I wouldn't share your view that OBIEE on VMs runs more slowly. I think that is just an issue with how the VMs are provisioned and/or configured on the host hypervisor.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll talk to our VM guys about why our OBIEE 11g vm is so much slower than the physical machines. It's "supposed" to have the same memory and cores, etc. but maybe not. Appreciate the feedback - thank you!
