difference between the session Presistence and the sticky sessions

We have physical load balancer for balancing the load between the two application server and two RAC nodes and we have Recently upgraded to the 11g database 
we had added the forms servlet 6i  instead of the socket mode 
now in the load balance'r we asked the network team to Configure the session Persistence but they had configure the session stickiness for 60 minutes 
whether it is correct or what is the difference between the session persistence and the session stickiness  
and please explain why we need the session persistence
