Updating an offer expiration date

Hi all, we had an offer expire before the recruiter was able to mark it as accepted in our system. When I went back in to update the offer expiration date, it still won't allow me to capture the candidate response. Do I have to cancel the offer since it had already expired, or is there something I'm missing that will allow me to move this offer to accepted?
