Reporting on a Subset of Users

I run a monthly report that at last count is about 47,000 lines long. The system typically times out before completing the run, so I have tried to run separate reports on subsets of users like, last names A-J, K-T and U-Z. I am using the Learn Center report and when I select these sets, the report still pulls the data for ALL users.

Can someone tell me how to run a report on a subset of users or point me to some training? Thanks!
