Password Best Practices from Recruiting to Onboarding

Hi everyone,
I was wondering what your best practices were for passwords and what you would recommend for password durations between Recruiting and Onboarding.
We've set password durations for Recruit and Onboard to two different lengths. It seems logical since Onboard has more sensitive information to set Onboard with a shorter duration. However, I'm worried that it could cause problems or confusion for the candidate. Anyone have some insight into this same issue or let me know what your company did?
I'm also wondering what were the decisions in configuring your passwords to be very complex or not complex - or if you have documentation about password security and suggestions for configurations so that it's best for the user and best for the company.
