Error message when applying for jobs

I have a candidate that is receiving an error message that state"candidate with email ****@xx.com already exists" everytime she applies for a position. What can be causing this error and how can it be corrected? I worry that I might have to purge her record to correct this, but I don't want to lose any historical data.
