Automated communication to "in-progress" candidates

We're interested in sending automated emails to "in-progress" candidates in order to establish better communication with candidates during the recruitment process. We already have automated emails in place for submission completion and disposition, but we want to communicate with candidates when they've been in a particular step/status for X number of days and haven't experienced any activity.
Is anyone currently doing this or does anyone have any ideas of how we might implement?
