Erroneous emails from Learning Plans - how do you handle?

On occasion we hear that we are spamming folk with past due messages that have already completed a learning planContent
How does you org handle? Is there a way to solve these as well? Is it that the Learning Plan needs to be "jiggled" and recalculated by opening the learning plan?
