Updating Assignment Start Date

Is it possible to manually update a start date on a record and retain assignment history

Dear Experts,

Is there a quicker way of updating assignment start date and retain all the assignment history (provided all the assignment history is still after the new start date)?

I am trying to achieve this without stripping the record to bare bones .i.e. removing the assignment history, update start date and re-enter the history. The reason for avoiding this is because there are lots of records to update to a new start date and stripping each one is time consuming.
