Disable Line Manager role

Customer is undergoing a reorg and we would like to see if we can disable the line manager functionality but enable 3 matrix manager types to meet their needs.

Our customer is undergoing a reorg and we are looking to not use the line manager functionality but enable 4 matrix manager types. I have a few questions:

1. Has anyone not used line manager hierarchy but only matrix managers for any implementations?

2. We don't see a way to disable the line manager functionality. Does anyone know if its possible to disable? Current thinking is that we would simply not populate any line managers for anyone.
