How to view new hire if approval workflow failed

Hello,

Once we submit a new hire and it enters the workflow engine there is no way to see the person.

If the workflow fails it seems the only options are to 'recover' or 'terminate'.  One just reruns workflow, the later seems to make the new hire record disappear all together. 

Is there a way to stop workflow or un-submit it, especially if it fails so we can look at the record and do updates?
