Resource Alert: First name variable?

I want to use the First Name rather then the whole name as this is too formal for us. It takes ${FirstName} but it results in a null value. I've gone through the learnerlearningrecords and all I can see is assignedToDisplayName which we don't want. There also doesn't appear to be anything available in other attributes.

Can this seriously not be done? Thank you.
