How is the list of nonworker user person types driven?

Summary:

I noticed that the list of non worker user person types cannot be deleted and seem to differ per country e.g. France has Trainee, Company Director whereas Switzerland has pensioner, volunteer etc.

Does anyone know if these can be deleted or edited? I've checked in the person types area and it's not clear - there's no country tagging configured.
