OCI Instance Migrated From Intel to AMD Shape Does Not Boot Successfully

edited Nov 17, 2022 1:56PM in Linux

Applies to:

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure - Version N/A and later

Linux X86-64

Symptoms

Ubuntu based 20.04 custom image instance is working correctly using Intel based OCI shapes.

After migrating the instance to an AMD based E3.Flex/E4.Flex shape, the instance is not reachable via SSH.

Boot messages show that a needed network driver module is needed but not available.

Cause

The custom image used in the instance does not support AMD based shapes.

Solution

  • In this case the image being used was found to be an appliance for OCSBC (Oracle Communications Session Border Controller).
  • It was seen that after changing the instance properties to Paravirtualized Networking and Paravirtualized Boot  Volume, the instance was able to boot successfully.
