How to Reduce an Instance Boot or Block Volume Disk Size

APPLIES TO:

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure - Version N/A and later

Linux x86-64

GOAL

How to reduce an OCI Instance Boot or Block Volume Disk Size,  i.e from 100GB to 50GB or 80GB ?

SOLUTION

Resizing a boot or block volume can only be done in order to increase the volume size, not decrease it.

For more info please check:

https://docs.oracle.com/en-us/iaas/Content/Block/Tasks/resizingavolume.htm

As a workaround, for a block volume you can create a new block volume with the correct size, copy the data from the old block volume to the new one and then delete the old block volume.
