Reset user password on remote instance

Hi. I have been struggling recently to log into my compute instance, as the password for my user no longer seems to work. (note, I have not changed it, it worked just fine yesterday, but today it just says invalid password) I have tried everything I could find to reset the password, for the most part by booting into either maintenance mode, or by editing grub to add an “init=/bin/bash” to the end of one of the lines.
