How to make the phone number required?

Summary:

We want to make it required for employees to enter a phone number for themselves and their emergency contact. How do I make the phone number required?

I created a sandbox and am using the page composer. I located the field I wished to update and clicked the edit component. There is no "This field is required" checkbox to make the field mandatory/required.
