Candidate search - search the candidate using customized filter

Our client ask us the possibility to search for a candidate from candidate search using the 'Day Rate' information. We can add the new custom field in candidate profile to track the 'Day Rate', however we are wondering why it is possible to use this 'Day Rate' information as a filter.
