OCI: Unable To Mount Block Volume To Multiple Linux Instance

in Linux 2 comments

APPLIES TO:

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Linux x86-64

SYMPTOMS

Customer is getting an error while mounting a block volume restored from a backup

[root@xxxxxxxxxxx-7-8 ~]# mount /dev/u02_vg/lv01 /testu02
 mount: /dev/mapper/u02_vg-lv01: can't read superblock
 [root@xxxxxxxxxxx-7-8 ~]#
[root@xxxxxxxxxxxxx-7-8 ~]# mount /dev/sdd /testu02
 mount: unknown filesystem type 'LVM2_member'

CHANGES

Customer is trying to attach and mount a block volume restored from a backup whereas the original volume is still attached to another instance.

CAUSE

If the LUN restored from a backup has an LVM group on it, they may end up with conflicting with volume group names. This is because the copy and restore process copies metadata as well.
