Update View Calculations rule - Non DSO

Summary:

Does anyone know what happens when the Update View Calculation rule is run in a Non-DSO application?

This rule was run in one of our applications, but we do not have Control To-Date View Storage turned on.

My understanding is that the Update View Calculation is linked to that setting, so I am wondering what the affect will be of running the rule when it is not turned on.
