Rel13: Directory Search as Employee doesn't work

Hi All,
We are observing that as an employee, when I try to search for someone within the organization through Directory search- i see a spinning wheel and no results are shown. However, when i click on Advanced Search for the same person, I see results.
The employee role has public person security profile set to View All People.
Any suggestions on how to get this to work?
