Matrix Manager - Why does OTBI return multiple matrix managers for each employee

Summary:

We use Line Manager and Compensation Manager when creating or updating an employee assignment. Our reports should return no more than two managers for the current assignment. Can someone help explain what's going on? Is it the data model in OTBI? Is it some detail in HCM we need to configure or correct?

It would be helpful to understand how to restrict our reports to display only the current two matrix managers assigned to each employee.

We see two issues when using the Matrix Manager folder in OTBI (Workforce Mgt - Assignment Details). First is how multiple rows are returned for manager 1 and manager two. We don't understand why or where the other rows are coming from. Second are the other manager levels (1,2,3 etc) that should be blank but have manager names appearing.
