Users Are Logged Out After 10 Minutes with Message "timed out waiting for input: auto-logout"

Symptoms
After 10 minutes of idle time, users are logged out with the following message:
timed out waiting for input: auto-logout
Cause
TMOUT=600 is set in /etc/profile and therefore every user is logged out after 10 minutes of idle time
Solution
TMOUT can be changed directly in /etc/profile and set to a longer period (in seconds) or it can be completely disabled by commenting it out.
