OCI: Server Rebooted Unexpectedly Due to Filesystem Corruption

APPLIES TO:

Linux OS - Version Oracle Linux 6.0 and later

SYMPTOMS:

The server unexpectedly rebooted and the user was unable ping and ssh.

CHANGES:

None

CAUSE:

As seen from the console logs, filesystem got corrupted and passwd file went missing.

[ 4.383642] EXT4-FS (SDA3): RE-MOUNTED. OPTS: (NULL) 
[ 4.583731] FAT-FS (SDA1): VOLUME WAS NOT PROPERLY UNMOUNTED. SOME DATA MAY BE CORRUPT. PLEASE RUN FSCK. 
[ 4.868844] ADDING 8388604K SWAP ON /DEV/SDA2. PRIORITY:-1 EXTENTS:1 ACROSS:8388604K FS  

SOLUTION:

  • Detach the boot volume from problematic instance and attach the boot volume as block volume to a test instance.
