In Chart of account value set values, we noticed a column called 'Sort Order' Could you please let me know what is the use of the same?

After creating COA values and uploading Hierachies we noticed that the values gets displayed in an alphanumeric order, but we do not want them to display in alpha or numeric and want them to get sorted in a custom order as per our requirement. So was wondering whether this would be our solution for the same. Can you please provide an explanation on the same. Attaching a screenshot of the COA value set value page.
