How to correct the hire date for an employee

Summary:

Need to correct a hire date which was incorrectly entered. Trying to change it to March 4 from Feb 29.
I tried changing the date from Employment Start dates but the error says you can't change the date because records for this assignment exists before. Delete the records or select a date before March 1.
I cannot delete Feb 29 because it is the first record.
