Can we add new assignment before the employee's current start date?

Summary:

We have Employee who has Active assignment record which started on 01/01/2020. but we want to add another assignment for the same employee which was started on 01/01/2018 with another legal employer. how can we achieve it ? any feasible solution for it or workaround other than deleting existing assignment and reload?
