Oracle Linux: How to move LVM VG and LV to a new Oracle Linux Instance

edited Aug 8, 2024 11:13AM in Linux

Applies to:

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure - Version N/A and later

Linux x86-64

Oracle Linux 7 – Oracle Linux 9.

Goal:

Move a Volume Group and its Logical Volumes to a new Oracle Linux instance

Solution:

Execute these steps on the First Oracle Linux instance as root user (sudo su -)

1 ) Unmount any filesystems that use the affected VG and its LVs. This is a requirement. In this case:

# umount /reports
# umount /docs

2) Make the VG inactive:

# vgchange -an dataVG
0 logical volume(s) in volume group "dataVG" now active

# vgexport dataVG
  Volume group "dataVG" successfully exported

3) Determine the PV(s) and LV(s)
