Bypassing the approvals when the approver appears multiple times in approval hierarchy

At present, when the same person holds the positions of both line manager and Business Unit head, they are required to provide approval twice as per the approval hierarchy. The expectation is that if the approvers are the same, then approval request should not occur twice. How to achieve this.
