Is it possible to create different rules for automatic Person Number generation?

We would like to automatically assign sequential number patterns for different types of persons to new employees. For example, Employees will start from 990000 and increase by one, while Contingent Workers will start from 55000 and also increase by one. Just as it can be done in Custom PLL, can a custom solution be created in Oracle for this?
