Format to enter phone details

We would like to know what is the exact format for entering phone details.

Ex: (Area code 3 digits + phone number with 7 digits = 10 digit number). Is this is the format that we are supposed to enter for USA ?

Or should be leave the Area Code field blank so that depending on the country selection the code will be updated automatically?
