Why is the 'Routing Number' field in the direct deposit information page a non-editable field?

Our clients had a requirement of unmasking the direct deposit information page so that their payroll & HRIS team can view & edit the direct deposit information page.
After we worked on this requirement, we are able to edit the account number field, but not the routing numbers. We would like to know the reason behind this.

Why is the routing number a non editable field?

Any inputs will be of great help.
