Is there a way to see inactive department from Tree structure

Is there way to identify inactive departments by looking at the tree ? We have use case where users want to know which department is active and inactive by looking at the Tree version . As of now both active and inactive departments are listed under active tree version but unable to differentiate which is active and inactive . Can someone suggest can we use node description to mention inactive ? If so , please suggest how to update node description and also will it have any impact .
