Why does the Role assign start date differ from the role assign last update

Hello,

We pulled a role assignment report and have noticed that the ROLE_ASSN_START_DATE is listed one day before the ROLE_ASSN_LAST_UPDATE_DATE which is the date that the role was manually provisioned. Can we get an explanation as to why this is happening?
