Form Validation rules on Smart List Labels

I'd like to create a data validation rule to apply formatting if a column value contains a text string (target column is a Smart List). The docs don't say it's impossible but can't get it to work. I know I can use the smart list ID instead but want to use the text comparison for my use case. Has anyone had any success?
