Can you make an attribute "invisible" to users?

Can you make a specific attribute "invisible" to users so that they cannot see the attribute member assigned to a base member?

During a situation where there is a reorganization being planned for future and only some people can be in the know about the reorg we need to be able to plan for the changes in the system while keeping the changes unknown to the general users. We have an attribute that we assign to members that will show the "owner" of a member for the current year and for the future year and this is causing issues because we cannot figure out how to hide this future year attribute from the users. Within EDM we can hide that
