Touchpoint Check-Ins vs Performance Check-Ins

We are currently looking into whether Touchpoints will be useful for our organisation, primarily for the check-in functionality it offers. One thing we are not clear on is how this compares to the check-in functionality currently being used by our organisation through the Performance module.

Are check-ins moving from the Performance module into Touchpoints? Or is the Performance module still required in order for the check-in functionality to work under Touchpoints?
