What Notification Pattern field means in Self-Paced Learning

We have started with Self-Paced Learning. but not aware about 'Notification Pattern' field.

If someone using or have some idea about this field please put some light on this.

It will be easy to us to understand then actual functionality of this field and whether to use it or not.
