Employees status setting to departure

We have a business rule that sets active status. This has been working without issue for over a year. Today, we noticed that some employees (all TBHs) have their status set to departure even though there is NO end date. What would cause this to happen? There have been no changes to this rule.

EDIT: I cleared/blanked out end date and it fixed it. End date always shows as a zero. How would we be able to know if it will calculate correctly?
