Impact of removing category communities (and just using topic communities)

Our learning team have made some changes to the way in which they want employees to browse for learning content, and have unpublished all the category communities, in favour of just using topic communities. Are there likely be any unintended consequences to making this change?

The recommended best practice for the learning catalogue is to use category communities combined with topic communities. Our catalogue has recently been updated so that only topic communities are being used. The way in which employees can browse learning has changed slightly as a consequence and there are some obvious visual changes.
