How to get the beginning and ending balances for each period?

We are in the process of implementing EPM planning and I'm trying to create a balance sheet and income statement reports in narrative reporting but can't figure out how I can get the beginning and ending balances by period. Looking for some help on trying to figure out how I can get this data to show on a report.
