Incorrect Cost Profile assigned on Item/s with Transactions

Summary:

User inadvertently assigned the incorrect Cost Profile (supposed to be Standard, instead of FIFO) to an Item and performed transactions against it. Item has a BOM. Since the system doesn't allow modifications on the Cost Profile once transactions exist, could someone please explain the downstream impact if users continue to transact the Item as FIFO?
