Date-Effective Custom Fields in Case Management: Configuration or Workaround?

Summary:
We are currently working on Case Management and have a business requirement to capture date-effective information against a Case.
Requirement summary:
- Business needs to store certain Case attributes (custom fields) that should be effective-dated, similar to how date-effective attributes work in HCM.
- Historical values must be preserved, and the system should determine the “active” value based on an effective start and end date.
- Users should be able to maintain changes over time without overwriting previous values.
What we have explored so far:
- Application Composer allows creation of custom fields on Case objects; however, these fields appear to be non date-effective
