task numbering in project plan page to be automatic

Summary:

We have a requirment for our task numbers to be automatically in a sequence which is 1,2,3,4,5 and any subtypes to follow a 1.1, 1.2. 1.3 numbering without mannually having to edit task numbers. (a new task added should automatically follow the 1 2 3 4 5 sequence) But the system default task numbers as seen below are automatically generated (i.e 943, 934… so on) is there a way to configure this?
