Configuring Auto-Release for Request More Information Transactions

Rice has noticed that when a user clicks Request More Information during an approval transaction, the user from whom the information is requested only has 72 hours to respond before the transaction is returned to the original approver. Once the transaction returns to the original approver, the workflow no longer functions as designed and the transaction must be abandoned and a new transaction must be submitted. Is there any way to configure or preferably disable the return to the approver after 72 hours?
