Is there a way to Automatically change manager based on Position Hierarchy only

I have a question regarding the behavior of the "Use HCM position hierarchy" setting for manager synchronization.

Current Behavior Observed:
We have noticed that the system uses the hire date of the manager to determine the assignment:

If a new employee is hired after the manager’s hire date, the system correctly assigns the incumbent of the parent position as the manager.

If a new employee is hired before the manager’s hire date, the system skips the parent position and looks for a "grandparent" position (one level higher). It continues to skip levels until it finds a manager whose hire date precedes that of the employee.
