why does payment information not appear on the invoice

Hello Everyone, Need confirmation on a question from my client. The invoice was cancelled and does not reflect a payment number. There is a payment number associated with the invoice but the funds were never disbursed from the bank. Is this common that the payment ID will not appear on the invoice 'Payments' tab?
