Manage pending approval transactions for employee that has resigned

Hi,
We have pending approval transactions for an employee who has already resigned. When the manager attempts to approve the pending transactions, the system displays the following error message: “An error occurred. Contact your help desk”. Now we have several approvals that is pending and Manager are not able to act on it.
Can anyone advise how do we manage cases like this? Is there a validity period for pending approvals whereby transactions can no longer be approved after a certain duration (for example, approvals pending for more than 9 months)?
