Purpose of 'period start dates' collected from calendar(zmm_sr_prd_start_dates ) in Supply planning

What is the purpose of data collected from this table? One of the FBDIs (CalendarPeriodStartDates_) for calendars collection extracts data from this table. Where is this data used in supply planning? is it mandatory ?

When setting up calendars in fusion 'Quarterly type' attribute is not mandatory, so this was not setup originally. The orgs using those calendars have been in use for a while now and the system will not allow you to update this attribute. Short of changing the calendar assignment in the org (we do not know what and IF there is an impact of such a change), Can anything else be done to correct the calendar setup (populate the quarterly type attribute) ? Only if this attribute is setup in the calendar that the table zmm_sr_prd_start_dates is populated. Does
