Inventory quantity not deducted after shipment confirmation

After completing the shipment confirmation for a sales order, the actual on-hand inventory quantity was not reduced. May I ask whether the inventory will only be reduced after running the "Send Shipment Advice" request? If we want the inventory to be reduced immediately upon shipment confirmation without having to run a program, can this be achieved? If so, how?
